Darkrield micrographs of coronal sections of the rat PVN showing that one injection of alcohol (3 g/kg, ig) 7 days after an initial treatment with the vehicle or alcohol (as described in Fig. 9) induced a signiricantly blunted neuronal response (expressed in terms of NGFI-B mRNA levels) in animals already exposed to the drug once. These data show that one of the mechanisms responsible for the blunted HPA axis response observed in this model is a loss of PVN neuronal response.
