This paper explores :

1. The history of the Veterans Administration and its hospitals.

2. The application of psychiatry in war and military settings in the twentieth century ­ and ultimately in the hospital setting.

3. Contemporary problems associated with psychiatric care and treatment of the Veteran.

Current issues such as Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, sexual harassment, inpatient versus outpatient treatment, psychiatric disability and compensation, substance abuse and dependance, and use of psychotropics will be addressed.

The author was trained at Veterans Administration hospitals and is currently a Staff Psychiatrist at the Nashville, Tennessee Veterans Administration Medical Center.
